چکیده

The classical secretary problem involves sequentially interviewing a pool of n applicants with the aim of hiring exactly the best one in the pool—nothing less is good enough. The optimal decision strategy is easy to describe and the probability of success is 1/e. In this paper, we consider a minor variant of this classical problem. We wish to pick not the best but the second best (the best is going to Harvard). In this case, an explicit solution can be given both for the optimal strategy and the associated optimal success probability. The probability of success is k0(n− k0)/(n(n− 1)) where k0 = bn/2c. Clearly, as n goes to infinity, the probability of success tends to 1/4. Apparently, it is easier to pick the best than the second best.

Advances on Matroid Secretary Problems: Free Order Model and Laminar Case

The most important open conjecture in the context of the matroid secretary problem claims the existence of an O(1)-competitive algorithm applicable to any matroid. Whereas this conjecture remains open, modified forms of it have been shown to be true, when assuming that the assignment of weights to the secretaries is not adversarial but uniformly at random [23, 20]. However, so far, no variant o...

Haar Matrix Equations for Solving Time-Variant Linear-Quadratic Optimal Control Problems

‎In this paper‎, ‎Haar wavelets are performed for solving continuous time-variant linear-quadratic optimal control problems‎. ‎Firstly‎, ‎using necessary conditions for optimality‎, ‎the problem is changed into a two-boundary value problem (TBVP)‎. ‎Next‎, ‎Haar wavelets are applied for converting the TBVP‎, ‎as a system of differential equations‎, ‎in to a system of matrix algebraic equations‎...

An Optimal Online Algorithm for Weighted Bipartite Matching and Extensions to Combinatorial Auctions

We study online variants of weighted bipartite matching on graphs and hypergraphs. In our model for online matching, the vertices on the right-hand side of a bipartite graph are given in advance and the vertices on the left-hand side arrive online in random order. Whenever a vertex arrives, its adjacent edges with the corresponding weights are revealed and the online algorithm has to decide whi...

Robust Method for E-Maximization and Hierarchical Clustering of Image Classification

We developed a new semi-supervised EM-like algorithm that is given the set of objects present in eachtraining image, but does not know which regions correspond to which objects. We have tested thealgorithm on a dataset of 860 hand-labeled color images using only color and texture features, and theresults show that our EM variant is able to break the symmetry in the initial solution. We compared...
